Toms River, NJ - The Ocean County College athletic department has announced the hiring of Sarah Porter in the position of head coach of the Vikings' women's basketball team. Coach Porter is a graduate of Arizona State University (Tempe), and arrives at Ocean with a wealth of experience and a true commitment to making a positive impact for women's sports both on and off the court.
Coach Porter was born and raised with a deep love for the game and the lessons that could be learned from it. She has spent the last 9.5 years honing her coaching skills and contributing to the success of her players and her teams, while hoping to further inspire young athletes to reach their full potential in the Jackson, NJ community and beyond. Porter has served as a coach of travel and rec women's basketball in Jackson, NJ from 2015-19, going undefeated through 2 seasons with the rec team, before becoming assistant head coach at Academy for Urban Leadership in Perth Amboy. From there, Coach Porter became the assistant varsity head coach and head coach of the junior varsity team at Jackson Liberty H.S. for the 2023-24 season. Since 2018, Coach Porter has also served as director and head coach of the girls program for Hustle Academy AAU, the first girls AAU team based out of Jackson, NJ, where she has worked to mentor, build confidence and continually incorporate and strengthen fundamentals, for both young men and women varying in ages from 8-18 in the program.
Off the court, Coach Porter is actively involved in various community outreach programs. She is director of the Board for the Porter Family Scholarship Fund - helping to provide scholarships for college bound high school seniors. She also serves as an advocate for helping to give back to military, healthcare, teachers and other "PortersHeroes" as a thank you to them for their service. Porter provides a true example of using your platforms to inspire positive change, and demonstrates how to make a lasting impact in the lives of others as she is also a Living Kidney Donor as of 2019.
"I'm looking forward to bringing my passion for women's basketball to Ocean, but even more so being able to inspire the next generation of strong, amazing and good human beings," remarked Coach Porter. "Let's go Vikings!"
